Texas Tax Deeds | Tax Title Services

The Lone Star State is a redemption state, which means those who purchase Texas tax deeds as an investment must wait out a redemption period before they can become the title owner and therefore, sell the property. At Tax Title Services, we believe it is important that you understand the process before you begin investing.

In Texas, the redemption periods on tax deed properties differ based on the property designation. Properties with a homestead exemption or an agricultural land use designation may be redeemed by the previous owner for up to two years. If the property doesn’t carry either of these designations, the redemption period is only six months.

If the original owner redeems the property within the six month period, the investor is due all taxes, costs, fees and 25% interest. If the property has a designation with a two year redemption period and the original owner redeems the property, the investor is due all taxes, costs, fees, and 25% interest during the first year of the redemption period and an additional 25% in the second year of the redemption period.

This high rate of interest makes investing in Texas tax deeds a very attractive proposition to real estate investors. However, if the original owner never redeems the property, an investor can sell it for an even higher profit.
