Taxing times: County Treasurer/Tax Collector Dan McAllister was delighted with the results of the county’s delinquent property tax auction last week.

The fire sale grossed $2.9 million, about $1 million more than last year’s sale, to cover tax delinquencies exceeding five years, plus fees, interest and penalties.

About 600 attended the San Diego Convention Center event and, of the 186 properties on the auction block, 85 were purchased: 71 comprised of vacant land, 10 with houses or other improvements and four time-share properties.

At least one prime property was removed from the auction block when its owners showed up with the delinquent funds at the eleventh hour. It was a $2 million home on Neptune Place fronting La Jolla’s Windansea Beach.
